Saw someone claim Son Heung-min was a better player than Ryan Giggs
I made the mistake of watching the Pitch Side podcast on YouTube. It popped up as a recommendation on YouTube, I clicked and watched as four blokes - none of whom looked older than about thirty - selected their top 3 players in Premier League history for each position.
The most insane take I heard was the one in the title. In his opinion Son beats Giggs for a spot in the best 3 left-wingers in the PL era. I have no idea who the guy was that said it, but it's just nonsensical. In the eyes of so many people Giggs seems to have become a Man Utd version of James Milner - just some bloke who was steady for 20 years and stuck around in a team that happened to win things. Like, "Oh I know he's won the league 13 times, but he was never that good a player really" kind of thing.
I'm nearly 50. I watched Giggs as a teen and in his early twenties when he was tearing it up on the left flank. Chasing down and harrying right-backs and wingers to tackle and retrieve the ball. His dribbling at speed was, back then, outstanding and allowed him to beat defenders or make space for crossing which was generally accurate. He could drift inside at times and dribble in for shots, or time his run into the box to score. He was absolutely a standout player in England in those days.
His detractors point to his goals tally without paying due attention to the fact that everyone played 442 back then, and wingers played deeper and hugged the touchline, rather than playing a much more advanced position now that is designed to get them cutting inside to score.
That's before you even consider the way he redesigned his game to become a versatile midfielder once his pace started to wane, and was capable of playing on the wings or in the middle well into his late thirties.
For the record, after the news about his affairs broke, I totally went off Giggs. But separate from that, claiming Son is superior is just nuts to me.
It all just seemed like guys too young to really know what Giggs was like back then. Between 1991-1996, in particular, he was sensational. Have they ever even bothered to watch highlights of his play and goals when he was young?
