How does Anthropic’s global workspace research affect Chalmers’s analysis of LLM consciousness?

Anthropic recently published research about the existence of something like a global workspace in large language models https://www.anthropic.com/research/global-workspace

This made me want to look back at the previous reasons Chalmers listed for why AI might not be concious, and it seems many of them were at least partially adressed with the exception of biological naturalism.

  • Senses and embodiment - Modern multimodal models perceive images, audio, and video, while agentic and robotic systems can act in virtual or physical environments.
  • World and self-models - Evidence for internal world models is now strong, while Anthropic’s finding that post-training creates a Claude-specific point of view and self-monitoring suggests a rudimentary but still limited self-model.
  • Recurrent processing - Chain-of-thought and agent loops recycle outputs as new inputs, but this is not quite the intrinsic neural recurrence required by some theories
  • Global workspace - Anthropic found a limited-capacity, globally accessible internal workspace causally involved in report, control, and deliberate reasoning
  • Unified agency - Post-training appears to produce a distinct assistant point of view and self-monitoring
