What do you think is the biggest reason Quoridor never became as popular as Chess or Go?

I've always thought Quoridor is one of the most underrated abstract strategy games.

The rules are incredibly simple:

Reach the opposite side of the board.

Place walls to slow your opponent.

That's it.

It takes less than a minute to learn, but it still has a surprising amount of depth.

Yet despite winning awards and being around for years, the online community is tiny compared to games like Chess, Go, or even Hive.

Why do you think that is?

Do you think it's because:

  • There aren't enough places to play?
  • The game wasn't marketed well?
  • It's too niche?
  • The skill ceiling isn't obvious to new players?
  • Something else?

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts. I'd also love to see the Quoridor community become more active again.
