Taking off hijab is not easy
Something I really hate is when people act like taking off hijab is so easy. As if someone just wakes up one day and decides to take it off.
But taking off hijab is anything but easy.
From the outside, people only see the final decision. They don't see the months or years leading up to it. They don't see the constant back-and-forth, the guilt, the fear, the attempts to convince yourself to keep going, or the hope that maybe things will somehow get better. By the time someone actually takes off their hijab, chances are they've already spent a very long time wrestling with that decision.
Ironically, it is sometimes easier to keep it on than to take it off.
Keeping it on means maintaining the status quo. Your family is happy. Your community accepts you. Nobody questions your character. Nobody gossips about you or treats you differently.
Taking it off, on the other hand, can turn your entire life upside down.
For some women, it means endless arguments with their parents. For others, it means losing friends, damaging family relationships, being ostracized by their community, or constantly being treated like they've become a "bad Muslim." Some women risk their marriages. Some risk their financial security if they still depend on their families. Some even fear for their safety.
And even after the hijab comes off, it doesn't end there. Many women continue carrying years of religious guilt and shame. They may panic when people see them, or feel exposed simply because they've spent years being taught that showing their hair is sinful.
That's why I can't stand when people say things like, "Well, nobody is forcing her. She can just take it off."
No. It is not that simple.
Taking off hijab isn't just changing how you dress. It can mean risking your family, your community, your identity, your sense of belonging, and everything you've ever been taught to believe.
People act like it's a small decision because all they see is a scarf. They don't see everything that's attached to it.
