Transitioning from Industry to PA (BC, Canada)

Career

Hey everyone,

I've been working in industry for a few months as a GL accountant in BC making $63k-68k annually at a company that offers PPR, but I'm worried about not having PA experience on my resume. I'm enrolled in CPA PEP and plan to sit for the CFE in 2028.

I'm mainly interested in Audit and Tax, with an interest in Transaction Advisory down the road.

A few questions for you all:

  1. Recruitment Cycle & Applying: How do you actually find and apply for Big 4 and mid-size positions? Since it’s August, did I miss my chance for the upcoming recruitment cycle, or do firms hire year-round for non-campus / experienced roles? Can't seem to find any positions on their career pages.

  2. Compensation: Entry-level public roles often pay less than what I make. Is taking a pay cut worth it for the long-term career growth and exit options?

  3. Applying: Is cold applying through job portals effective or should I try and network in-person?

I really enjoy working at my current company and I know the workload in public is really tough but I know there are long-term benefits.

Feeling really unsure about my future. I'd love your advice, reality checks, or personal experiences.
