breaking the lease

Hi, I’m looking for peoples experiences. My boyfriend and I are living together & I’m considering breaking our lease and ending the relationship. We have to pay nearly $7,000 to break the lease in addition to rent for the final 2 months. If you’ve done this- is it like the person initiating the break up who should pay the whole amount or should it be split up between the two people? i’m just not sure if it’s so incredibly fucked up to say “hey i’m ending things and you now need to pay a fuck ton of money”

he’s lucky bc he can likely move in with his parents not far away so he wouldn’t have to keep paying rent whereas I’ll need to find somewhere to live and pay rent and move in fees
