What would people think if someone wore a "pirate style" eyepatch?

An acquaintance of mine is having his eye removed due to cancer soon. He's told me he will get an eye prosthesis. That got me thinking: I have never really liked the look of eye prostheses, so if I lost an eye, I'd probably just wear an eyepatch. But I'm wondering: What do you think the general opinion is on such patches? Will people not mind, or will they think "look at that idiot cosplaying as a pirate"?
