The line graph illustrates the proportions of the population living in urban areas in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia between 1970 and 2020, with projections for 2030 and 2040.

Overall, Malaysia showed the highest percentages of people living in cities, whereas Thailand recorded the lowest. Initially, Indonesia was fewer than Thailand and the Philippines, but at the end, it exceeded both.

In the beginning, Malaysia had around 30% of its inhabitants living in cities, which was slightly lower than the Philippines' approximate 31%. In 1980, however, Malaysia surpassed the Philippines ever so slightly with around 40% compared to 32%. In 1990 the Philippines retained its lead. Malaysia continued to increase gradually until the end, and recorded roughly  80% in 2040, while the Philippines saw some fluctuations and registered about 60% in 2040.

Thailand was slightly greater than Indonesia with around 20% compared to about 15% in 1970. Both countries remained relatively stable until Indonesia caught up with Thailand in 2000, both seeing proportions of approximately 25%. Both countries saw a gradual and steady increase, and within the end of the figure, Indonesia was ahead of Thailand with 60% compared to 37%, respectively.
