Best way to monitor long-running tasks?

I often want Codex to kick off an ML training experiment, monitor it for success/failure (may take a few hours), debug and relaunch if failed, collate and report results if succeeded, and iterate if needed.

Is there a recommended way for Codex to babysit long-running tasks like this? I suppose I could just tell it to do so in a new thread, but that seems somewhat wasteful and requires my computer to be on. Not sure if Goal Mode or other automation is better suited for this.
