Help simplifying level ups and amount of moves

DMing

I’ve got a group I am DM’ing that is newer and enjoyed our last campaign, but specifically asked the I simplify things a bit for our next one. They felt that their characters all had way too many moves to pick from, and it was confusing to figure out what they all did, all of their effects, and which moves to use. They asked if they could have more like 4-5 moves each only, so it’s simpler, and easier leveling up because that was complex.

Some of this is obviously just because they are newer and will learn more about what the moves and effects are over time, but they are also the kind of guys who don’t really want to spend all their time in menus reading about moves and min-maxing. They specifically mentioned that they are fine if it means their characters might be less adaptable or have a lower variety of moves, they really just want it to be a simplified version of things a bit.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to simplify things to help improve this? I’ve had a few ideas, but they seem like they might break other things if I do them. I’ve though about leveling up being a more standard: you gain hp, everyone gets 1 ability point to add, and you pick just one of the new things your character would gain from the level up instead of all of the things. That would make each character less unique though and probably mean each class is less unique (missing a lot of what makes each class special).

Looking for tips and other ways people have helped simplify things. Thanks!
