It Started with Knocking at Midnight

This is one experience I’ll never forget, and even today, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.
A few years ago, I was home alone in the United States. My parents and siblings had traveled to Pakistan because of an urgent family matter, but I stayed behind because I had school and couldn’t miss my studies. At that time, I didn’t know that many members of my family believed there was something unusual about the house.
One night, I was playing games with my friends until around midnight. After we got off, I was sitting quietly in my room when I suddenly heard someone knocking on the front door.
At first, I convinced myself it was just my imagination. I was alone, after all, and sometimes your mind plays tricks on you. A few moments later, I heard the knocking again.
This time I got up, walked downstairs, and checked the front door. There was no one outside. The street was completely silent. I looked around for a minute, locked the door again, and told myself I was probably just overthinking things.
Around 1:00 a.m., I finally went to bed.
I woke up at around 3:20 a.m. after hearing what sounded like dishes and other objects being thrown around in the kitchen. At first I thought someone had broken into the house. I immediately tried to get out of bed—but I couldn’t move.
My entire body felt frozen.
It felt as if something was pinning me to the mattress. My arms wouldn’t move. My legs wouldn’t move. I tried with all my strength to lift myself up, but nothing happened. My body felt ice cold, yet I was fully aware of everything around me.
For what felt like two or three minutes, I struggled to move.
Then I heard my bedroom door slowly creak open.
The moment I had gone to sleep, my gaming PC’s RGB lights had been on, giving the room a soft glow. But when I opened my eyes, the room was completely dark.
Standing in the doorway, I thought I saw two dark figures.
One appeared to be very tall—around seven feet—and the other much smaller, perhaps around three feet tall. I couldn’t make out any faces or details. They were just dark silhouettes.
The taller figure slowly moved toward my bed.
I was terrified.
I shut my eyes because I didn’t want to see whatever it was. Then I felt what seemed like someone climbing onto my bed from the foot of it. It slowly came closer until I felt as though it was standing right beside my nightstand.
I tried to recite verses from the Qur’an, but every time I managed to say a few words, my mind would suddenly go blank. It was as if I kept forgetting the next verse no matter how hard I tried.
Then I felt an intense pressure on my chest.
It honestly felt like someone incredibly heavy was sitting on me. The pressure became so strong that I thought my ribs were going to break. I couldn’t breathe properly, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t move or call for help.
The most frightening part was that I felt something very close to my face.
I could feel what seemed like warm breathing only inches away from me. I remember thinking that whatever it was, it felt incredibly real.
Those ten or fifteen minutes felt like hours.
Then, little by little, the pressure began to fade.
Just then, I heard the Adhan coming from the living room. We had a clock that automatically played the call to prayer at the correct times.
As the Adhan played, I gradually regained the ability to move. By the time it ended, I was completely free.
The first thing I noticed was that I was drenched in sweat. My heart was racing so fast that I thought I was having a panic attack.
I immediately called my parents and told them everything that had happened. They told me to stay calm, perform wudu, and play Surah Ar-Rahman or another Surah throughout the house.
I did exactly that.
As soon as I began reciting and playing the Qur’an, I personally felt a sense of peace return to the house. After making wudu, I prayed, and little by little I calmed down.
Whether someone explains what happened as sleep paralysis, a spiritual experience, or something else entirely, I know one thing for certain: it was one of the most terrifying nights of my life, and it’s something I’ll never forget.
