I was reviewing some classic TA and Culture case studies today and went down the rabbit hole on Zappos' famous "The Offer." For those who might not be familiar, at the end of their onboarding program, Zappos used to offer every new hire a choice: keep the job, or quit right then and there with a $2,000 bonus. (Amazon later adopted this and bumped it to $5k).

The logic was sound for what they were trying to achieve:

1. Weed out people who just wanted a paycheck and weren't aligned with the intense customer service culture.
2. Create "active commitment." By turning down the money, the employee psychologically commits harder to the role.
3. Save money in the long run. $2k is pennies compared to the cost of a toxic hire lingering for 9 months and dragging down the team.

Historically, only about 2-3% of people took the offer.

But I’m looking at this through the lens of our current market. With inflation, cost of living, and the generally transactional nature of the employer-employee relationship right now, do you think a strategy like this would backfire today?

Would we see a massive spike in people treating a company like a 4-week paid bootcamp just to grab the $2k severance? Or do you think the core psychology still holds up—that top talent will stay for a good culture, and paying the misaligned folks to leave early is still a bargain?
