I'm financially and emotionally drained by my marriage of 6 years. How would you react if you were in my shoes?
I'm a man in my 30s, and this is my second marriage. I'm posting here because I have no one to talk to and I can't afford professional help. I'm not asking for a specific decision to be validated. I genuinely want to understand how other people would react if they lived through what I'm about to describe. Please, no judgment. I'm barely holding it together.
My wife has had 3 jobs in 6 years, all on and off. The longest lasted exactly 3 months. She hates searching for work. When I bring it up, she'll look briefly until she thinks I've forgotten, then slide back into watching social media or movies all day. I've carried the household financially the entire time. I've tried everything I can. Nothing helps.
This isnt just about jobs. It's a cycle that repeats with everything. When I reach my breaking point and express frustration, she follows a precise script: cry, apologize profusely, ask for a second chance, promise to become better, start trying to improve, then slow down after 48 hours, and completely stop by the third or fourth day. Right back to where she was. Sometimes she even asks me to make a list of what I need her to change, which I've realized is just a delay tactic. The lists never get honored.
There have been so many lies over the years, most of them completely unnecessary. Small things, big things, things that didnt even matter. I've tried multiple times to understand why she keeps doing this. At one point she said she was afraid. I asked afraid of what, she said she does not know. So these trust issues have brought us to a place where trust is barely hanging by a thread. I honestly dont know what's real and what's not anymore.
Her mother has repeatedly told me I should be grateful because "at least she's not stealing or prostituting," that her father would happily take her back, and has accused me of being the problem whenever I expressed exhaustion. I once told her mother that my cousin recently died from stress related to an abusive marriage. She immediately ended the call.
Recently my wife got a low paying job at a lab. She's also currently pregnant. Last night, we talked about going for a pregnancy lab test together and agreed only I would know the baby's gender since she said she didn't want to know. The very next day, she went alone, took the test at her workplace, and casually told me she now knows the gender because the attendant told her. When I asked why she didnt wait so we could do it together, something we literally discussed the night before, she lied and said she thought she'd told me. She later sent an apology that was essentially "I'm sorry you feel that way, I thought I told you."
I broke down. I've been sitting on the floor crying for hours. I feel invisible. After 6 years of giving everything, I feel like I don't matter at all.
I'm not here to ask "should I leave?" I'm asking something broader. If you were me, if you had lived through these exact 6 years, this exact cycle, this exact moment on the floor, how would you feel? What would you do? How would you process this? Have you been through something similar, and what did it do to you?
