Similar to The Worf Effect,** **but grander in scale and different in intent. This is when a celestial being, physical god, demigod, or some other being of god-like strength or phenomenal cosmic power is handicapped in order to keep an antagonist who the audience is aware of is no where near their weight class relevant and therefore preserve the story’s conflict at all cost including consistency in world building and character. By all rights, the audience knows the being who is bigger than the chosen antagonist and higher in the celestial food chain should be able to curb stomp this mere mortal in about 5 seconds, but they can’t because…the script said so. This is usually reserved for heroic or at least neutrally aligned beings, antagonistic creatures of great power are typically free to curb stomp all the mortals they want, until mortal protagonists take them down.

**1. Princess Celestia, Solar Diarch, Eldest of the Two Sisters, Sovereign Ruler of Equestria, (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)** she is the trope namer because she is quite an egregious example. For those who are unfamiliar, she is an immortal princess who spent over a thousand years as the kingdom of Equestria’s head of state, and its resident solar deity, using her vast magic to cycle the sun and moon. Her minimal involvement in the resolution of the plot was understandable when they were cosmic threats on her level, such as her younger sister when she was possessed by Nightmare Moon, and the spirit of chaos incarnate known as Discord. But it became very apparent that the writers kept shelving her so the mortal heroines could do the day saving when she entered into a magical battle with an insectoid love vampire feeding on her mortal captain of the guard…and LOST! Let me repeat that, an immortal queen in all but name… whose Royal duties include juggling celestial bodies…lost a magical duel…to a BUG. And the reasons for keeping her on the shelf became more and more egregious, including, and you’re gonna love this one, forcefully draining the vast magical power from herself, her sister and her niece into her mere mortal apprentice Twilight Sparkle, to keep it safe from bull headed centaur who desires to suck the kingdom dry of all magic to become a god king himself. And the excuses for keeping her off the board got lazier and lazier. Also, as a sidenote since this part doesn’t really add to this trope, it is hard to respect the God Empress of Pony kind when the mere sight of a chicken can send her up a tree, shaking in fear.

**2. Lucifer Morningstar, Former Prince of Heaven, Lord of the Fallen, the Prince of Pride, the Devil himself, The Mother-F@$&ing King of Hell (Hazbin Hotel)** needless to say the Serpent of Eden is one of the closest character to the level of God, with a capital G within the Hellaverse. However, his vast cosmic power has one limitation. He cannot smite a sinner. Now at first this seems like interesting world building and character development, a fallen angel who’s only crime was wanting mankind to be free of Heaven‘s control, is himself left powerless to stop the hordes of Heaven’s rejects as they run amuck through his kingdom, destroying everything he built for them and cursing his name as punishment for his defiance. But that’s the Watsonian Reason. The Doyleist reason is a certain failed televangelist/serial killer needs to remain relevant in order for the story of the popular uprising in Hell to declare war against Heaven to happen. So the King of Hell, who almost pounded the Father of mankind and the Leader of the closest thing Heaven has to army which basically pulls double duty as Adam’s personal harem, cannot go ROFL stomping Mr. TV Head Man like the insignificant insect he is, hence the rule. Look for all the Overlord Vox fans I may have just offended, I get the appeal I really do, but the fact of the matter is Vox is punching WAY above his weight on this one. He is Five rungs down the hierarchy of Hell from the Fallen One himself, just below the Ars Goetia and Vox couldn’t even win a glorified rap battle against a rival he hadn’t seen in SEVEN YEARS. The only reason Mr. Vincent got as far as he did in his little rebellion without being put in his place either by an angel, whether fallen or those who exiled Lucifer or the various arch demons who might also have opinions on his plan to conquer Heaven, can be summed up in three words, that also nicely summarize my issue with this trope. Diabolus. Ex. MACHINA. If it’s considered lazy writing to have a random act of God save your hero, why should it be any different to have a random act of the Devil, save your villains? (Puns very much intended)

**3. Thanos, the Mad Titan, The Outcast (Marvel What If…)** in a Parallel Universe where the prince of Wakanda was kidnapped to become the Star Lord, T’challa also managed to talk the Mad Titan down from his plan of expunging half the universe to preserve its finite resources, turning him from a universal threat to a stalwart ally. However even with a redeemed conquerer finding himself in a world of cardboard and training himself to hold back and avoid any accidental killing, it is hard to swallow a demigod who pounded the Hulk into a pulp and tossed aside every hero like a minor inconvenience in a separate timeline, would struggle in a fight against his former underlings in this one.

**4. Alastor, The Radio Demon, the Bayou Wendigo, Sponsoring Patron of the Hazbin Hotel (Hazbin Hotel)** after showing some examples that stretched credibility, how about we look at some examples where this trope actually works. Enter Alastor, scourge of the Pride Ring, a former serial killer, radio host and an absolute elderitch horror that perfectly embodies the devil making deals at the crossroads. But after being gravely wounded in his fight with Adam, his powers have become very much diminished, so much so he can no longer hold his own against his rival who was very much introduced to us as a joke, that Alastor could easily curbstomp if the TV headed little piss ant was worth the effort which was made very clear, he was not. But normally this is where the conflict would usually end, with the god like being essentially shelved for the rest of the story. Is Alastor down? Perhaps, but he sure as fucking Hell ain’t out. So, he switches tactics, instead of trying to out muscle the failed weather reporter, who failed upward only because he kept murdering everyone above him, then he would out think him. He plotted and schemed and broke the alliance Vox was reliant on, and even made a little deal with his former patron for his power back. All in all, much more creative use of this trope in a way that avoids sidelining a character that people still haven’t figured out if he is a villain waiting for the perfect time to strike against our heroes, or an anti hero who might prove that even the worst devils may not be beyond redemption.

**5. Zeus/Zack, Son of Chronos, Bane of the Titans, Father of Hero’s, Lord of the Heavens, King of Olympus (Disney’s Hercules animated series)** this is another interesting example of how to make an omnipotent god like being vulnerable without shelving them. So after Hercules complains to his Heavenly Father, (Pardon the pun) about his bullying from a mere mortal prince, Zeus leaves him with the unhelpful advice of, “you just have to show him who’s boss.” This naturally escalates into a full blown argument that ends with Hercules walking away throwing back the challenge of, “you wouldn’t last 24 hours as a human teenager.” In a vain attempt to prove his son wrong, the king of the gods transforms himself into the form of a mortal and adopts the name Zach as a disguise and goes the Hercules school. When Hermes calls him out for cheating by using his god like powers to put the prince Adonis in his place, Zeus makes himself fully mortal for what might be the worst 24 hours of his life, and that is coming from someone who was nearly swallowed whole by his own father. Adonis speed runs a full on humiliation bullying routine to the point where the mortal king of Olympus literally begs Hermes for salvation, admitting Hercules was right, even crying out, “no one knows what it’s like to be man!” Towards the Heavens. To make a bad situation even worse, his brother Hades, Lord of the Dead, learns of Zeus’s mortality and unleashes Cerberus in an attempt to kill him. What makes this work is not only the proud god in mortal form learning a lesson in humility, there is an easy win condition for the climax. All Herc and Zeus have to do is hold out till the 24 hours are up and the audience gets the curb stomp that is usually denied in this situation.

**6. Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman, The Man of Steel, The Last Son of Krypton, The Man of Tomorrow (DC Comics, and various animated series, including My Adventures with Superman)** Superman has been an important part of our culture for a long time and as such has experienced this done well and done wrong, to the point where to many he might be considered the poster boy for this trope. I have heard complaints that superman’s fights are hard to write engagingly, where it’s either an absolute ROFL stomp by the Man of Steel against whatever poor criminal/metahuman/alien/monster was dumb enough to come into his city, unless they have the right kind of green glowing rock, allowing them to curb stomp the Krytonian boy from Kansas, unless Clark manages to put some distance between the radioactive chuck of his former homeworld, then it’s back to him stomping on whatever poor unfortunate soul is interrupting his coffee break from the Daily Planet. Or the other extreme when he is working with the Justice League and an extremely strong foe punches him through a wall, and the rest of the team team have enough time to get a few blows in or get beaten up in the time it takes Clark to pick himself up, dust himself off and get back in the fight, which takes a man who can tie in a race with the Flash an oddly long time to do that. But it is fascinating when writers take the time to think about what it must be like to live “in a world made out of cardboard.” To not want to hurt anyone a live in fear of permanently crippling someone by offering to shake their hand and squeezing just a little bit too hard. It’s interesting to think about how much he is holding back for the sake of his friends and family and honestly, the new series my Adventures with Superman explores the subject brilliantly and keeping the Man of Steel challenged in a way that neither shelves him or makes it feel like the devil got into the machine.
