Turn indicator on Steering Wheel?

At times when tv shows the cockpit, you can see on the steering wheel at the upper left an icon shows whether the next turn is left, right, etc.

Is that something drivers actually look at?

I just assumed with all of their driving and simulators they would have the track memorize and wouldn't need a reminder.
