“It proves again that no man is an island. No hero can save the day alone. No hero can save themselves alone.”

A new angle on a previously-covered hero - [Derek Does…Books: “The Weight of a Symbol: Ed Brubaker’s Captain America.”](https://open.substack.com/pub/derekdoes/p/derek-doesbooks-the-weight-of-a-symbol?r=na19h&utm_medium=ios)

Brubaker is genuinely one of my favorite comic book writers and has made huge impacts on some of my favorite characters: Batman, Daredevil, and of course Captain America.

His run highlights the emotional complexity of Steve Rogers the man, the palpable weight of being an American symbol, and the consequences of our actions. I love the questions Brubaker asks about morality, grace, and guilt - concepts we all grapple with, even the Sentinel of Liberty.

I hope you give this piece a read and think about the morality of our favorite heroes and how they deal with the consequences of their actions, decisions, etc. - both the reality and the perception. Take a look.
