Audition song requirements, advice?

Hello! I'm auditioning for Rent this fall at my university, and the audition notice says to pick a minute of a Contemporary Rock, Pop, or Musical Theatre song (ideally upbeat or fast tempo). But the notice also says "Songs from Rent are welcome but not required."

How should I take that? Part of me wants to sing a section from a Rent song (maybe the first verse and chorus of What You Own), but another part of me wants to sing something else (If I go that route, I'd most likely sing 30/90 from Tick Tick Boom).

Any advice is welcome. Thank you!
