Diagnosis feels very wrong and worried about taking prescribed meds
I’ve always been skeptical around psychiatry and taking meds for mental health, but my life is at the point where I need intervention. I suspect I have something like ADHD or autism based on my issues, but after my initial assessment, the only thing my doctor would really consider was anxiety and depression. I experience anxiety, but it’s usually from fucking up at work or forgetting daily responsibilities/not feeling on top of things. I really don’t agree with the depression assessment because I have no problem doing the things I like doing. In fact, my one or two core interests are the only things I ever want to be doing, and forcing myself to do other general life upkeep + responsibilities is the main issue.
I still scored mild for both anxiety and depression and now the psychiatrist is putting me on SSRIs and an anxiety med to take as needed. I’ve heard some great success stories from people taking SSRIs but usually it’s because they are constantly overwhelmed with anxiety or extremely depressed which is just not me. I’ve also heard it makes people really apathetic and robotic like, and I worry that it will affect the main qualities I actually enjoy about myself, the fact I care a lot and I come across as quirky and upbeat.
If SSRIs didn’t take so long to see the effects and if it didn’t alter brain chemistry so much, I’m probably still try it. But currently I’m just very wary about going down that path. Something feels very wrong. The entire assessment felt like he’d already decided I had anxiety and depression and then would talk me into ranking certain questions higher than I would have on my own. I said I often forget to eat and he marked that as a lack of appetite. I have trouble falling asleep at night because that’s when I finally feel awake and he took that as not being able to sleep because of anxiety.
I really want to get another assessment before starting meds. Really, I want an assessment for ADHD and Austism, but I’m worried I don’t seem enough of either. Someone said I couldn’t have adhd bc I took AP classes in high school? I come across as pretty “normal” when you first meet me, but I’m pretty sure it’s bc I can fake it really well for short bursts. Long term my interpersonal relationships are a disaster.
