Anterior hip pain 6 weeks no improvement, worth imaging? 34F
34F, no chronic diagnoses, not on any medications. I take fish oil and vitamin D, nothing else. I cycle regularly and do yoga a few times a week, so hip mobility is something I actively work on.
About six weeks ago I started noticing a dull ache in my right anterior hip, right in the crease, mostly during the upstroke on the bike and occasionally at the bottom of a low lunge in yoga. No trauma, no fall, nothing changed in my training load at the time. It doesn't radiate down the leg. No clicking or catching sensation. Just a persistent lowgrade ache that isn't resolving the way a normal muscle strain would by now.
I've been stretching, doing targeted hip flexor work, and backing off intensity a bit. It's maybe 20 percent better but has plateaued there. The location makes me think iliopsoas, but I can't fully rule out something at the anterior hip joint itself, like a labral issue, without imaging.
Is this presentation enough to push for an MRI, or would a musculoskeletal ultrasound be a more reasonable first step? And is six weeks long enough to justify imaging rather than continuing conservative management? My gut says something structural is going on, but I want a clearer picture before deciding next steps.
