Feeling emotional about child’s photo being sent around
Now I’m 8 months post partum, I know there’s a very big chance I’m just feeling a lot of emotion in general and maybe being dramatic.
My husband and I decided when I was pregnant we were going to do a no social media rule with posting our child online. My family really had no problem with that, they don’t post on social media themselves, and they also share the same knowledge of child safety online that I do. We told my husband’s family, they asked why, and did not know the dangers. But respected our rules.
The only thing is, my in laws are sharing photos of my child to all their friends and coworkers. Some coworkers I might add who live in completely different countries who I can’t know and get to know them. Is this not basically the same thing as sharing them online? Because they still have access to his photos just like they would if we posted them.
I didn’t know they were doing this until today. My parents have photos of my child but they don’t share them. They show their friends if they are out having dinner but they don’t send photos of him to friends/coworkers. Maybe I’m just being dramatic, but it feels very similar as just posting him.
All I want to do is protect him from predators and the ever growing world of AI right now. My husband doesn’t share this as deeply as I do. It took some convincing to get him on board with the no social media rule. I’m not sure how this conversation would go if I brought it up with him. I believe he thinks I’m being overprotective. And maybe I am. But I have a best friend who was groomed and abused starting at age 4 and lasted until she was 21 years old. By a family friend. He had dozens of photos of her at his apartment from when she was a little child. Pictures her parents took of her.
I just want to keep my children as safe as possible that’s in my control. I guess maybe I’m asking for advice? Or maybe a reality check if needed?
