Can your landlord change the locks while you're at work? Why a lockout is usually illegal even when you're behind on rent
Self-help eviction - changing locks, removing doors, shutting off utilities, taking belongings - is one of the few landlord-tenant areas where the law tends to be unusually blunt. In many places it's not just a civil violation; it can carry penalties, and being behind on rent generally doesn't make it lawful.
The usual rule: removing a tenant requires going through the court process, however long that takes.
Has this happened to you or someone you know - and what actually worked to resolve it? State or country please, since remedies and penalties differ significantly.
