Is it emotional abuse?

Support

My adult son (29) is an addict and also has severe mental health issues, gambling addiction also. About 6 months ago, it was very bad and i found the courage to set a boundary and remove him from my home (he’s not allowed to live here anymore).
My question is that recently his car broke down and he reached out to me, saying basically everything he knows I would like to hear: that he’s so grateful for me, I’m the only mom he will ever have, even discussing his commitment to recovery (because he know how much i would be happy if he stayed in recovery). He needed help with car repairs and I did end up helping (paid the car shop directly).
After that exchange, he kind of disappeared and stopped responding much. He’s my only child so obviously this has been a very difficult journey as a parent. I’m feeling like it’s manipulative and possibly even abusive, but does that sound accurate or maybe not?? Some outside perspective would help me.
I did let him know i can’t fund any more car repairs and encouraged him to start a savings fund for next time. It’s been a very long and very painful journey. Appreciate any thoughts on how we get better. I have some books on boundaries and also attend support groups but I don’t have a lot of friends and no other family.
