ELI5: How exactly do phone carrier companies and their “free” phone promotions work?

I’m trying to open up a new phone line with a company and I keep seeing “free” phone promotions. Basically you sign up with them and they give you the latest phone or something, but it’s deeper than that I’m thinking. I’m definitely paying back for the phone somehow through my bills right? Someone explain
