A composite teardown: 0 callbacks to 3 interviews, here's what changed
Quick disclaimer up front: this is a composite example built from patterns I've seen across a bunch of real reviews, not one specific person's before/after, since I don't have permission to post anyone's actual resume here. Every change below is a genuinely common fix though, not a hypothetical.
Before:
- Two-column layout with a sidebar for skills/contact info
- Bullets like "Responsible for managing a team and improving processes"
- Skills section buried at the very bottom, after education
- Section header labeled "My Toolkit" instead of "Skills"
- Dates formatted inconsistently (some "Jan 2021," some "01/2021," one just "2021")
After:
- Collapsed to a single column so the parser reads top-to-bottom without scrambling
- Rewrote bullets around outcomes: "Reduced onboarding time for new hires by 35% by redesigning the training checklist" instead of "responsible for managing a team"
- Moved skills up, directly under the summary
- Renamed "My Toolkit" to "Skills"
- Standardized every date to "Mon YYYY"
None of this touched the person's actual experience or added anything that wasn't true. It just made the existing experience legible to both the software and the human reading it afterward. That's usually where the biggest, cheapest wins are.
Happy to do a similar breakdown on a real resume if someone wants to post one (redact your personal info first).
