In March of this year, I had surgery on my left ear to remove a large cholesteatoma and repair my eardrum. (I had this same procedure when I was 13, but the cholesteatoma returned.) I’ve had my follow up appointment and everything looks good, and I had a very slight improvement to my hearing on that side. I do still have a lot of crackling, but my surgeon let me know that is normal. I remember my ENT saying there was a possibility of nerve damage to the tongue before the surgery, but nothing in the notes indicates that there was any concern afterward.
In June, I had an old filling replaced on one of my bottom back teeth on the left side. Starting about 2 weeks later, I began to notice a sweet taste on the left side of my mouth - almost minty? I had a follow up at the dentist, and they checked to make sure nothing was wrong with the filling, no floss caught somewhere, etc. They weren’t able to find the cause of the sweet taste.
Around a week ago, I began to experience an odd sensation with the left side of my tongue. The best I can describe it is similar to when your hand or foot falls asleep, or maybe when you touch your tongue to a battery to test it. It happens consistently throughout the day and doesn’t seem to be related to eating, talking, etc.
And now, the sweet taste is still sweet but also somewhat metallic. It is constant and does not come and go throughout the day.
My question is - what the heck? Is this more likely to be related to the ear surgery or to the filling? Should I schedule something with my primary provider, or try to get an appointment with either the dentist or the ENT? My PCP is very overbooked and generally schedules around 4-5 months out.
I do have acid reflux and post-nasal drip and thought for a while that the taste I’m experiencing could somehow be related, but now the tongue sensation has me wondering if there is something going on with a nerve. How would I even pursue getting an answer to this?
