Every area of life feels hard right now. What are small steps I can take to start improving things?

General Advice

First I want to say that I have a lot of be grateful for- I have a beautiful family, roof over our heads, a job, etc. But every area of my life feels hard right now and I just feel stuck. Any thoughts on small things I can do to help get unstuck?

First, family. My SO and I have an amazing relationship. We are a solid team and there is a lot of love there. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, went through surgery, chemo and radiation. While she is currently cancer-free, the chemo left behind a lot of complications. And she is also at high risk for recurrence. She's had multiple hospital stays, procedures, tests, etc. It's exhausting physically and emotionally for her and of course takes a toll on all of us.

We have two kids. They are amazing but anyway you slice it, parenting is hard work. It's constant and never ending. Our oldest kid (7) is autistic and while he is doing great in a lot of ways, but also has his fair share of struggles. And as a result of that, I feel like our younger kiddo is getting the short end of the stick. We try our best to make sure that she gets to pick activities, meals, and has alone time with us. But sometimes I can tell she is frustrated by her brother and that breaks my heart. They are both in therapy but the day to day can be hard.

And all of that leads me to the second issue- finances. All of the above has take a toll on our finances. We are a single-income family. I am lucky to have a good job and I get to work from home, but the pressure of being the sole provider for our family is STRESSFUL. On top of that, my job hasn't done bonuses or raises in years. We are struggling to make ends meet- I donate plasma twice a week and we are selling what we can on FB marketplace. We are also starting the process of filing for bankruptcy, which is bringing me a lot of shame. But we struggle. I know the best way to make more money is to find a new job but the market in tech right now is not great. And my manager and the higher ups were so supportive when my wife was sick. That kind of flexibility and support was not something I'd experienced before and who knows if I would get it again at another place. If she gets sick again, I want to be able to be by her side every step of the way.

And speaking of jobs- I am not losing interesting my actual job. I work in tech and AI tools are being forced upon us from every direction. It's useful for some things but more trouble than it's worth in others and honestly it has sucked the joy out of any work I do. But as mentioned above I am hesitant to switch.

The last area is my health and wellness. I am extremely obese at 5'5", 350 lb female. I have always been on the chubby side but this is the heaviest I have ever been and I am miserable in my body. It's affecting my ability to be a great parent to my kids and I hate that. But stress and depression is making it hard to make meaningful changes for any period of time. My doctor prescribed Zepbound because I have sleep apnea but I am currently jumping through all of the hoops to get my insurace to actually cover it. And I know that even if I get it approved, I still have to do the work and make the better choices to actually lose weight. But I am hoping the med will make it that much easier.

So if you read all of that (and if you did, thank you) if you were in my shoes what is one small change or thing you would do tomorrow morning to start making your life better in one of those areas?
