Toxic Work Environment + Being Pushed Out

Hello lovely strangers from the internet, I need of a bit of encouragement and advice.

Five years ago I secured my first corporate job in Chicago. Not long after being onboarded it became clear to me that the VP of our department did not care for me as a person. Most often she would speak over me anytime I tried to speak during meetings and often made inappropriate comments towards me in group settings (e.g. “I’ve never had to work with someone like you before, I actually had to receive additional training to work with someone like you,” “is your mom a teen mom?” “Don’t give that work to ____ she doesn’t know how to do anything.”). While I felt incredibly disheartened by those comments I took it as a challenge to prove myself. I knew I was a fast learner and hard worker, all I had to do was continue to try to put my best foot forward and eventually my worth will be acknowledged, or so I thought.

Not long after being hired my direct boss, the director of our department, was pushed out and a new hire, the VP’s friend she had met many years ago through a previous job in Wisconsin, was onboarded to take her position. Once my new direct boss was onboarded somehow things got worse. More work, less guidance and absolutely no support. My new direct boss has the habit of assigning work at the last minute, expecting a fast turnaround for all asks, often sharing little to no insight about what she expects deliverables wise but is quite harsh with her critique on the back end. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, anytime she’s made a mistake somehow it’s either someone else’s fault or it’s brushed under the rug by the VP/her friend. And yet, anytime I’ve made a mistake, regardless of how big or small, she immediately blows up at me, stating that mistakes as small as a typo in a document are proof of my inadequacies, blaming me for anything that goes wrong on a project despite me showcasing proof that I am not at fault. I’ve been on the receiving end of a multitude of emails where she’s taken personal digs at me, using small infractions from months prior like a typo in a document or an excel sheet she thought should be updated more often  was reason to submit multiple written warnings. Each time I’ve responded with HR copied providing email threads and files proving that my boss is either greatly exaggerating the mistake or outright lying (as she has on multiple occasions) to punitively punish me and push me out the door. It’s been incredibly demoralizing to deal with this type of treatment over the past few years. Constantly feeling as though at any moment I could be on the receiving end of cruel commentary while having my job security threatened over and over again. From her referencing things in work meetings that lets me know she’s stalked my social media to telling I’m “too new” in my career, I’m 15 years younger than her, it’s been made clear that she hates me, she makes no secret of it. Three weeks ago she issued a final written warning, including small mistakes as her reasoning as why it was being issued (e.g. one multipage document I drafted had a typo and me missing a deadline that had never been communicated to me, another team had asked for our team to develop certain deliverables, my boss had assigned the task to me but never communicated the timeline the other team had shared. I built my own timeline that I was working off of since no timeline had been communicated. Instead of taking ownership of her lack of communication she blamed the missed timeline on me). After trying time and time again to prove my worth, over working myself, over extending myself to handle not only my workload but big portions of hers, and going back to school get my masters degree to prove that I am knowledgeable and capable (all directors and VPs in the department only have bachelors degrees) I’ve accepted the fact that in the end none of that matters. My boss and the VP are trying to push me out as they did to two of my nice coworkers who were pushed out and fired last year, and like one other coworker is being pushed out currently. I’ve already spoken to my parents and they’re willing to financially support me while I search for a new job. Very, very grate for that. I’m asking for advice on how to handle things leading up to being dismissed and how to not be burdened by the mean girl treatment until then.
