Advice For Beginners

Educational

Hello guys, for every beginner just start his journey in algo trading, and start backtesting ideas and many strategies, the most comon mistake made by themajority of beginners is backtesting in historical data of few moths or 2-3 years, and think they found profitable strategies, guys please never trust a backtesting results from few months or even 2 years, this data is not enough, for a trustworthy results it will be very good test on 10 years worth of data, ofc split the data on 70/30, 6 or 7 years of optimizing then the rest for confirming, if you can do a wlk-forward it would be good, just walk-forward testing not optimizing, and also try to void overfit by stress test the strategies and use Monte Carlo simulation for more trust, and also the main reason why too many beginners fail in live after testing on 10y of data with splitting it and do everything alright it's because they forget to include the costs, guys you can get a profitable strategy with realistic results and no overfit or look ahead bias or anything else and when you add costs the expectacy EV turn to be negative and get a trash strategy, the costs are :"Commission, spread, slippage(the fill order price), and maybe swpas for forex or people who use swap accounts", and i hope this can even help someone 👍
