How do you handle a planned all-day power outage when guests are staying at your property?
I’m curious how other hosts handle this situation.
Recently, I was notified in advance by the local electricity authority that there would be a scheduled power outage from 9 AM to 5 PM while guests were staying at my villa.
Because our water pump also relies on electricity, this meant the guests would have no electricity or running water for most of the day.
As a quick solution, I offered them a complimentary private longtail boat trip to the islands, so they could enjoy a day out instead of staying at the villa. Fortunately, they were very happy with the arrangement.
This isn’t something that happens often. We occasionally have unexpected power outages, usually caused by weather or other issues, but they normally last less than an hour. Most guests are out sightseeing during the day anyway, so it has never really been a problem before.
This time was different because the outage was scheduled to last almost the entire day.
For other hosts: how would you normally handle something like this? Would you offer an activity, partial refund, late check-out, compensation, or something else?
I’d love to hear how others deal with planned utility outages that are outside the host’s control.
