**Norma Shearer** (August 10, 1902 – June 12, 1983) was a Canadian-American actress who reigned as the **"Queen of MGM"** and the "First Lady of the Screen" during Hollywood's Golden Age. Renowned for her glamour, versatility, and fierce determination, she successfully transitioned from silent films to talkies.

She made cinematic history as the first five-time Academy Award acting nominee, winning the Best Actress Oscar for her daring role in The Divorcee (1930).

* **Early Obstacles:** Born in Montreal, her family lost their wealth after WWI, prompting a move to New York. Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegfeld and director D.W. Griffith initially rejected her, citing her unconventional looks and a minor eye cast.
* **Sheer Willpower:** Undeterred, she took minor extra roles, retrained her eyes, and caught the attention of producer Irving Thalberg, who brought her to MGM in 1923.
* **Power Couple:** She married Thalberg, MGM's production head, in 1927. This creative and personal partnership gave her significant leverage to select prime, complex scripts and directors.
