I tested 3 versions of LinkedIn cold outreach and the “personalized” one was the worst
I used to think the problem with cold LinkedIn messages was volume.
So I built a small internal workflow to help me draft more “personalized” connection notes and follow-ups. It pulled obvious profile info, summarized it, and gave me a first line.
The first batch was terrible.
I sent 300 messages over 3 weeks:
- batch 1: AI-written compliments based on profile/headline
- batch 2: shorter messages based on a real trigger
- batch 3: trigger + specific business hypothesis + low-pressure question
Results:
- batch 1: 7 replies / 300-ish messages, mostly polite dead ends
- batch 2: 28 replies / 240 messages
- batch 3: 41 replies / 260 messages, 11 actual calls booked
The difference wasn’t “better copy.” It was removing fake intimacy.
Bad version:
> Saw your impressive work helping SaaS founders scale. Would love to connect.
Better version:
> Noticed you’re hiring 2 SDRs while still founder-led on sales. Curious if outbound is already working or still messy?
The second one worked because it didn’t pretend we had a relationship. It showed I had a reason to message.
What I’d do differently now:
- no compliments unless I genuinely mean them
- never mention more than one “personalization” point
- write at a 7th-grade reading level
- ask about a situation, not a meeting
- follow up with context, not “bumping this”
AI helped most as a researcher and editor. It was bad when I let it be the salesperson.
Has anyone here found a way to use AI in outreach without making the message feel like a synthetic LinkedIn poem?
