We can’t have free will because we don’t have a self and we don’t have a self because the idea of having a self implies autonomy when really it’s biology that has the autonomy. You can say that it’s your personality but your personality was given to you by genetics and by your actions which were caused by your genetics so it’s impossible to make a choice for yourself because everything that’s been built up into what you consider your self (or ego) is merely biology and you’ve no choice in the matter. Another way to explain this is that when you make a choice who’s making the choice? Your ego. Well what makes your ego make the choice? Biological factors that you have no control over. As Thomas Ligotti puts it “…we can choose to do anything we like in this world… with one exception. We cannot choose what any of our choices will be.”  Or as Schopenhauer puts it “Man can do what he wills but he cannot will what he wills” So why do I hate this? Because it crumples the idea of punishment and accountability, even of personal accomplishment. We are only as good or successful a person as we were born to be so you have to feel pity for people who do bad things because they were given a mind that makes them do those bad things but you still have to punish them so that society may be held up. However, I wouldn’t hate this if my “consciousness” didn’t make me hate it and make me want meaning and therefore the vast majority of my displeasure is caused by the fact that I haven’t experienced ego death. Literally wtf reality. There’s no reason for me to need a consciousness why give me one??????
