Am I just flat out screwed at this point?
I have a BS in Computer Science and 5 years of prior SWE experience. I got laid off May 2025, and haven’t had a SWE or IT job since. I’m not going to go too deep into it, but I’ve had several mental health crisis (suicide attempt even) and family stuff happen that I guess prevented me from getting back into the work force. I have a part time job at a grocery store I’ve been looking at.
Of course I’ve been out for a while, which now makes me an undesirable. I’ve thought about just trying to get into IT, but it sounds like I need to spend thousands of dollars in certificates to even be looked at as a candidate. I have an essentially lost my 5 years for being out of the market for so long, so I don’t have that anymore either. The market for juniors is pretty much dead. How tough of a spot am I? Should I just say goodbye to the field and hope I can level up in my grocery store retail job? Or is there a feasible way I can get back into the field? I’m willing to accept the consequences of my actions.
