Is my 23M bf forcing me 23F to talk to his 32F sister and his 32M brother in law?

Dating Advice

I’m Mexican and my boyfriend is Indian, and I’m not sure if this is a cultural difference or just disrespect.

Back in March, I went to his niece’s 3rd birthday. I was already feeling insecure because I’ve gained some weight and struggled to find something to wear. About 30 minutes after I got there, we were taking pictures and my boyfriend’s brother-in-law suddenly said out loud, “you have gotten fatter.” I was shocked and didn’t say anything in the moment. Later, I got really upset and stepped away to call my mom and started crying.

My boyfriend and his stepdad came to check on me and apologized, but I just wanted to leave. At that point, everyone noticed I was crying, and when I tried to explain myself, the brother-in-law (who was drunk) was smirking and laughing. Things escalated, my boyfriend slapped him, a fight broke out, and it turned into a huge scene. I ended up leaving.

This wasn’t the first time he’s insulted me — he had previously called me a clown for wearing too much makeup. My mom texted my boyfriend’s sister saying if I’m not welcome, they shouldn’t invite me. His sister responded saying it was “just a joke” and that I ruined the family and it was my fault. My mom blocked her after that.

A few weeks later, the family all apologized to each other — except to me. I’m still hurt and more self-conscious than before. Honestly, I don’t even want an apology anymore because I don’t want to see them again.

The issue now is I’m going to India with my boyfriend and his family. His mom wants me to make up with his sister and brother-in-law because we’ll all be together there, including for his brother-in-law’s birthday. I told my boyfriend I’m not comfortable and asked if I could just stay home during that, but he said it would “look bad” and people would talk if I didn’t go.

Part of me feels like I should just suck it up since it’s not every day, but another part of me feels like I shouldn’t have to, especially after being disrespected and never even getting an apology. Would it be wrong of me to not go and avoid them completely?

Should I even go to India? Am I being dramatic about the situation?
