Could I realistically earn £80k–£100k as a driving instructor working 7 days a week?
Hello
I was recently made redundant from my job.
I’ve since moved back in with my parents in the North west and started taking driving lessons. My friend is a driving instructor and charges £75 for 1.5 hours or £100 for 2 hours, correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this is on the higher end of instructor rates? He also works 7 days a week.
It got me thinking: given that I was already regularly working 7 days a week in my old job, could I realistically earn a similar amount as a driving instructor?
I estimated that at my friend’s rates, someone working consistently could potentially make around £80k–£100k pre-tax after business expenses. Obviously that depends on keeping the diary full, cancellations, running costs etc., but it’s made me genuinely consider a career change.
The appeal is potentially earning somewhere around what I was earning in banking while having much more autonomy over my hours and work.
Are there any driving instructors here who can give me a reality check? Is £80k–£100k actually achievable working long hours, or am I massively underestimating the costs/downtime involved?
