What’s the incentive to work hard in life when retirement, home ownership, and parenthood seem like unattainable goals to most of us?

I’m genuinely curious what motivates yall. I know a lot more people have quoted spending money on traveling, entertainment like concerts, etc. I definitely enjoy those things but it’s still mass consumerism and only provides temporary fleeting happiness. I just can’t find those things being my primary motivation for a whole life.
