How do you measure long pieces, like longer than a normal 1 foot caliper?

I'm new and have only ever worked on small pieces, and was wondering how you check really long pieces, like a meter (yard) or longer? Are there long calipers, do you measure in sections? It seems like long calipers would be unwieldy and hard to get an accurate measure with them.
