Stolen special interest collection
I didnt know I was autistic as a child and if my parents suspected, they never mentioned it. I was obsessed with Lord of the Rings, especially as a kid. I saw all three movies in theaters opening weekend (I was 5 when the first one came out) and I started collecting the toys/action figures. It's the only stuff I'd ask for on my birthday or Christmas, any money I had was meticulously saved to expand my collection. I easily had over $300 worth of collectibles, a fortune at my age. I played with them all the time but I took incredible care of them. I never lost a single accessory, nothing broken, kept sorted in totes, and my siblings couldn't touch them unless I was with them.
When I was 11, my mom gave my collection to some kids she babysat without even mentioning it to me. She gave them everything I'd collected, every single one. I knew these kids, they were a nightmare. By the time I found out what happened and asked for them back (maybe a week at most) I was told it was already too late. They'd been broken or lost or so carelessly tossed in with other toys, either way, I never saw a single one of them again.
Even then I was pretty good at masking. When I asked why she did it she just said that I didn't play with them as much anymore. All I said was I wish you'd have asked me and dropped it. I mourned the loss of my collection in private. It's been 20 years and the memory still brings a tear to my eye. I've never collected anything else since, any new special interests have only existed in my mind.
