Faculty Workload Policy
What is your workload policy? Obviously, it differs across institutions based on R1, R2, liberal arts, etc. I’m TT at an R2. I teach 2 class per term (sometimes 3) and I always teach 3 sections each per class with different modalities. I’m burnt out already after only 3 years. Class sizes range from 75 to 20 students. I’m also expected to research. Is this normal?
I’ll also point out that TT can only teach 9 units per semester - according to the university wide policy. Anything over that requires overload pay or should be leveled out somehow the next semester. But if I teach an online section in addition to an in-person section, they won’t count that as a part of my teaching load. If I calculate all of my units each semester, I average about 17 units. Sometimes 21 units. According to my dean, online classes don’t count - but if they don’t count then I don’t want to teach them. I’m afraid to push this any further though. Anyone else have any experience with this?
