Trans people of color, how would you feel about someone comparing the current administrations transphobia to segregation (context in comments)
First, I know they are fundamentally different and I don't mean to reduce them to the same thing.
I am currently in the process of cutting off a relative--a pretty committed trumper and transphobe.
He keeps saying: "How can you cut off family for politics? It's just politics!" and every variation thereof.
What I want to say is something like this:
"In the 1950s, people voted for segregation. That was "politics". But it was ethics too. It was a question of morality. Supporting segregationist senators and governors was supporting racism, and that is a moral stand.
You supporting Trump is supporting xenophobia, racism and the genocide (too strong?) of trans people. That is where you stand. And that is not 'just politics'. If you support this, we are not family, we are not friends."
My question: would you find the comparison of Trump's transphobia to Wallace offensive? Would you find the comparison of transphobia to segregation offensive or reductive? Would you suggest another phrasing?
