26(F) & 32(M) —My boyfriend threw my phone after I threw it first. How would you interpret this? n.
I’m 26F and my boyfriend is 32M. We’ve been together for several years, and I’ve never seen him get angry like this before.
We were driving on the freeway and he accidentally took the wrong exit. It was only going to delay us about 5 minutes, but I completely overreacted. I was screaming, getting frustrated, and giving him directions. I know I was being unreasonable.
At one point, I threw my phone at him. He picked up my phone and threw it back really hard, and it hit the inside of the car. His reaction shocked me because I’ve genuinely never seen him do anything like that before.
I know throwing my phone was wrong, and I take responsibility for that. But seeing him react that way scared me. My heart was racing afterward and I suddenly felt scared of him, which is a feeling I’ve never had toward him before.
I’m curious how other people would interpret this. Is this just a really bad, mutually aggressive argument where we both need to take responsibility, or is his reaction something I should be more concerned about?
For context, he has never physically hurt me or behaved aggressively toward me before this incident.
TL;DR: I overreacted and threw my phone at my boyfriend after he took the wrong freeway exit. He threw it back hard enough to hit the car. I’ve never seen him react like that before and it scared me. I know my behavior was wrong, but I’m wondering how concerning his reaction is.
