Perimenopause and ADHD Medication
Between taking Lamotrigine for focal epilepsy (which also helps with low mood) and changing to IR Medikinet that I was beginning to make progress. Then as soon as I hit 40 (like overnight! It was ridiculous) the anxiety, low mood & lack of motivation I would experience the week before my cycle (which was a regular thing for me), suddenly cranked up 10 fold!!
I started to experience perimenopausal symptoms, even though I was on the pill, my cycle arrived regardless of whether it was due & lasted twice as longer than usual for me. This went on for about 2 months. (I am no longer on the pill btw to see if it helps with something/anything!).
I felt that between the Lamotrigine & Medikinet I would be able to manage a lot better. But now I find that the week before my cycle, my ADHD meds don’t work at all, & my Lamotrigine keeps most seizure types at bay but no longer helps with low mood or anxiety.
During other times, I can cope, when I say cope, I mean get out of bed have conversations, regulate my emotions better and be rational.
But even with the IR Medikinet, most days I still experience lack of motivation, pretty much zero proactive energy &struggle socially, definitely exacerbated since turning 40 (I will be 42 next month).
I’m curious to know if anyone else experiences this? And how have you managed it?
