Is this a case of hyperfixation?
I'm using Sherlock Holmes as an example because that's what I'm currently working on, and it's the most intense case I've ever had, but I've been doing this kind of thing since I was a child.
Sometimes, randomly, I develop a really strong interest in things. Often it's movies or books, not often anything really specific. Right now, if I have any free time, I'll probably spend it doing something related to Sherlock Holmes (watching a movie, a series, reading the books, listening to the audiobooks, Wikifan, fanfictions, edit, subreddit on the subject...)
It doesn't stop me from concentrating on other things or functioning normally (well, it just takes away some sleep time), but it's always in the back of my mind. If I can connect a task that It has nothing to do with that, I would do it. I sometimes stim ((Especially flapping and clapping hands) when I do things related to my current interest because idk, I just love it. Sometimes I'm so engrossed that I don't realize I'm thirsty, or that I need to pee, or even that I need to go to sleep. It doesn't stop me from doing other things or functioning normally, nor to have normal relationships with people.
