Noisy upstairs neighbours in Switzerland — what would you do?

Everyday life

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping to get some advice from people living in Switzerland, especially if you’ve dealt with noisy neighbours before. I’d really appreciate any suggestions or personal experiences.

I live in an old apartment building in Switzerland with quite poor sound insulation. My upstairs neighbours are frequently very noisy late at night. I can hear loud footsteps, running, skateboard/rolling noises, moving furniture, and loud conversations.

The main issue is that this sometimes continues until 1–2 a.m., and it seriously affects my sleep.

I have already gone upstairs to speak to them about the noise four times, including at midnight, but unfortunately the situation has not improved.

I have also contacted the building management (Verwaltung). They told me that they have already sent the tenants a warning letter, but unfortunately I am currently the only tenant who has formally complained. However, we are the only tenants living directly below them, so we are also the only ones who can hear the noise this clearly.

The management suggested that if the noise happens again, I should contact the police directly so that they can deal with the tenant.

To be honest, calling the police feels a bit dramatic to me, especially for something like noise from neighbours. I don't want to call the police over normal living noises such as showering or normal conversation, particularly because the building has poor sound insulation. However, if there is continuous running, loud noise, or similar disturbances after midnight, I'm not sure what the usual approach is in Switzerland.

For those living in Switzerland, how would you handle this situation? Would you actually call the police if the noise continues late at night, or is there another approach that would be more appropriate?

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice!
