Congratulations Kalyan, we're officially famous for the wrong reasons.
According to a report from India Today, over 160 people were bitten by stray dogs in Kalyan in just about 24 hours between Sunday and Monday. An 11-year-old is in the hospital. This is where we are now.
What is worse is the hypocrisy I see everywhere. We have plenty of "dog lovers" in the city who come out during the day to feed them. They get their feel-good moment and go home. But who is out there at night? The local residents.
When these dogs start running after bikes, barking incessantly at 2 AM, and making it impossible for anyone to get a decent night's sleep, where are those feeders? They are safely inside their houses.
It is easy to talk about compassion from a distance, but the people actually living here are the ones dealing with the menace. We need to stop enabling this and demand a real, permanent solution from the authorities instead of just posting pictures of feeding dogs on social media. We cannot keep living like this.
