NTT--How long before a decision?

I'm in Nursing. Final interview was mid July with a call to one of my references 7/23. Since then, nothing. My reference quickly called and said that they were excited and eager about me. It was a fantastic interview week "you are on the top!" Etc! From the committee, director, Dean on down. Heavily supported program.

I know they were hiring 3 of us but I have honestly heard nothing.

How long does this take? They knew they were behind the ball but do I just have to assume that I lost this position? There's been no update at all on the website of New faculty. I've been in academia before and well, this new era is lost on me. I've done 1 thank you and 1 follow up email.

The likelihood of getting an offer and starting this semester is over right? But i also know we have ppl start late sometimes. (4 yr institution)

Just give it to me straight.
