Did any other women marry someone who wasn’t initially their “type” physically? How did attraction develop over time?
Assalamu alaikum,
I’m looking for women who have been in a similar situation, especially women who had a potential for marriage who wasn’t necessarily their ideal physical “type” at first.
When I first saw pictures of him, I actually \*\*liked what I saw\*\*. It wasn’t a situation where I found him unattractive or had no physical attraction whatsoever. But afterwards, my feelings about his appearance started fluctuating a lot especially after seeing him in real life.
Sometimes I really like his face, especially when he smiles. Other times I catch myself focusing on little things and thinking, \*“His eyes look a little far apart,”\* or wondering if I would prefer a different facial structure or a different overall “vibe.”
I also have to admit something that makes me feel guilty: I know that I’m considered attractive by other people (Allahumma barik), and sometimes I get the thought that I could potentially find someone who is more physically my type. \*\*I don’t want to think this way\*\*, and I’m not saying this from a place of arrogance. But the thought does cross my mind, and it scares me. Also indeed like the conceit of attraction may be different for women.
At the same time, I wonder whether I’m approaching attraction too intellectually.
I’m a very critical person when making decisions in general. Even when buying something as simple as jewelry, I can spend a long time looking for flaws and convincing myself that I don’t like it — and then once I’ve actually chosen it, I end up loving it.
I sometimes wonder if I’m doing the same thing here.
Because when I’m actually with him, I feel very comfortable. And after some time I don’t sit there thinking about his eyes anymore. I was chatting with him for a long time so I forgot how we interact in reallife but this will soon change inshallah.
But then the doubts come back.
I’ve also had a lot of waswasa throughout this process, so I’m struggling to distinguish between \*\*a genuine lack of attraction\*\* and simply overthinking/looking for reasons why I shouldn’t choose him.
Some of my aunts have told me that once you are married and emotionally attached to someone, you don’t look at them in the same way anymore — that their face becomes \*your person’s face\*, and little imperfections stop mattering. Interestingly, I feel like I’m slowly starting to experience something similar already. The more comfortable I become with him, the less I notice the specific features I used to obsess over.
At the same time, I sometimes wish he had a slightly different style or vibe physically.
So I’m wondering:
\*\*Have any women here married someone who wasn’t initially their ideal physical type?\*\*
Did you initially have doubts about their appearance?
Did attraction grow after emotional attachment developed?
Did you eventually stop noticing the features you used to overanalyze?
Or did you realize later that physical attraction was genuinely missing?
How much did personality, emotional safety, compatibility, and the way he made you feel affect your attraction over time?
And if you’ve dealt with colorism or having a particular “type” because of it, did marriage or getting to know someone change the way you viewed attractiveness?
I’m \*\*not looking for people to tell me “looks don’t matter.”\*\* I understand that physical attraction matters in marriage. I’m more interested in hearing from women who have actually lived through this and can tell me what happened to their attraction \*\*after marriage or after becoming deeply emotionally attached\*\*.
Please be kind. I’m genuinely trying to understand my feelings and make the right decision, and I don’t want to hurt someone because I couldn’t figure out whether my doubts were real or just overthinking.
JazakAllah khair 🤍
