Black hair to brown at home - help !

I’m looking to go from black hair to a soft brown look, nothing too light just enough to soften my overall look but have heard non-stop horror stories about Garnier’s dye, it’s like in a tub I think? where hair turns orange and that’s like the last thing I want..

Any suggestions for which brand/shade to go for? I don’t want anything too dramatic
I’m from the UK so places like boots and Superdrug are ideal and im on a tight budget but if I have to spend more I don’t mind, thanks :) !
