Play aggression on bed and sofa
I have a 1-2 year old rescue who is playful and high energy. He is very sweet and likes to be held and pet and will come sit in my lap if I sit cross legged on the floor.
However if I am on a soft surface like the sofa or my bed, he seems to get overstimulated and will lunge at me and wrap himself around my legs/arms/hands and try to kick and bite. It is definitely playful and not out of anger or fear. He also likes to bite and claw at the bedding, which damages it.
I have tried to find advice online but most people seem to recommend redirecting, walking away, or removing the cat from the area. When he is this level of stimulated, redirection doesn't work as he might be distracted by a toy for a second or two but will then just go back to attacking me. I can walk away, but that means every time I want to sit on the couch or lie in bed I have to get up after a few minutes and leave the room. I also don't know how to remove him because when he's in this state I can't lift him up as he will attack my hands if I reach for him. If I try to use an object to push him off, he thinks I am playing.
Am I just using the above methods incorrectly? Would really appreciate any advice.
