I’m testing an AI voice agent on the problem everyone keeps talking about: missed calls
I've been working on a voice AI for local service businesses, and I've noticed something interesting from talking to business owners:
The problem isn't really “I need an AI receptionist.”
It's:
“I can't answer every call, and I don't know how much money I'm losing because of that.”
So I'm testing the system around one very specific use case first:
A new customer calls → nobody is available → AI answers → figures out what they need → captures the important information → books or routes the call.
I'm deliberately NOT trying to make it do everything.
For example, with an HVAC company, I'd rather have it correctly collect:
- What's wrong?
- Is the system completely down?
- Is there an emergency?
- Service address
- Customer name + number
- Preferred appointment time
- New customer or existing customer
…and then hand it off appropriately.
I'd rather have that work reliably than have an AI pretending it can diagnose an AC system.
I'm looking for people to break it.
If you run a service business, give me the scenario you think would make a voice AI fail.
Interrupt it.
Give it incomplete information.
Ask something outside the script.
Try to confuse it.
Ask a pricing question it shouldn't answer.
Then tell me exactly where it sucks.
I'm much more interested in “this failed because…” than “sounds cool.”
I'm going to document the failures and improvements here as I keep testing it.
For anyone here who has actually deployed a voice agent: what was the first thing that went wrong that you didn't anticipate?
